Chromium-6-containing primer has in the past been widely used in the Netherlands on metal surfaces of ships, trains, aircraft, cars, defense equipment, bridges, viaducts and on industrial objects such as factories and storage tanks.

Chromium-6 is one of the forms of the chemical element chromium (Cr). Chrome is a metal: gunmetal, hard, brittle and reflective. The dangers with chromium-6 arise when the object to which the primer has been applied is processed (drilling, grinding, welding) or when the paint and the underlying primer are removed. In principle, therefore, all activities in which particles can be released, in the form of smoke, vapor or dust. Those particles will contain chromium-6 and can enter the body, usually through inhalation.
