To comply with international maritime legislation it is forbidden to have asbestos spare parts on board. Spare parts containing asbestos exist mainly of old (sheet) gaskets or gaskets produced recently in countries without asbestos ban. SGI Compliance has a dedicated team that works worldwide to remove asbestos from ship’s stores and clean asbestos contaminations.
When asbestos (gaskets, insulation or fibre board) is present on board in systems that are in use, it is best to implement an asbestos safety plan. An asbestos safety kit on board is part of the asbestos safety plan and can be used by crew for unforeseen maintenance or repairs in case of leakages. SGI Compliance has made hundreds of asbestos safety plans and delivered many asbestos safety kits.
When vessels are in dry-dock it is the ideal time for removing asbestos from the ship. Multiple projects have been finalized successfully. Removal of hundreds of asbestos gaskets including replacements have been conducted on containerships, bulkcarriers and cruise vessels. SGI Compliance team members include asbestos surveyor, analysts with mobile laboratory, removal workers and flange technicians. SGI Compliance has assisted owners of offshore platforms in preparation of decommissioning.
Our SGI Compliance team has been involved in large asbestos removal and demolition projects not only in Europe but also in South America, Middle East, Africa and Asia. Asbestos removal management including setting up a temporary asbestos laboratory. Projects include powerplants, steel and chemical factories and offices of corporate multinationals.
Dealing with hazardous materials during operation is part of the overall health and safety policy of ship owners. The integrity of constructions (e.g. the hull) of vessels and pressurized equipment on board is important. SGI Compliance has colleagues trained for Non Destructive Testing.
