Immediately after the publication of NEN-EN-ISO 11731 Water – Counting of Legionella in June 2017, NEN started developing the Dutch practice guideline “NPR 6278 – Water – Explanation of the counting of Legionella according to NEN-EN-ISO 11731”.
The NPR was published in March 2019. This guideline provides an explanation for the use of NEN-EN-ISO 11731 and, in addition to the count, also describes the further identification of Legionella suspected colonies on the basis of their appearance.
Esther van Harmelen-Vrins, KVGM coordinator, was one of three project leaders on behalf of SGI Compliance Environmental Control, together with Bureau de Wit-Eurofins and Vitens, who was responsible for the development of this practical guideline. The new guideline was created partly through input from the workshop on November 22, 2017 in which feedback on topics from the published standard was heard. This has now been included in the new guideline. ‘I am very satisfied with this new practical guideline; it provides more clarity and unambiguity for the Dutch market regarding the practical implementation of the analysis. This should ensure reliable and comparable results’, says Esther van Harmelen-Vrins.
